Chaos erupted across Homa Bay County over the weekend as armed youth, local blockades, and coordinated attacks targeted leaders, journalists, and businesses connected to the Linda Mwananchi political tour.

The pressure group—led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna alongside other key opposition figures—was holding rallies across the county when violent disruptions brought parts of Homa Bay Town, Suba South, and Nyandiwa to a standstill.

The escalation highlights mounting political heat and security concerns as political factions maneuver for influence ahead of upcoming election cycles.

Key Incidents During the Unrest

1. Raids on Local Accommodations

Nighttime terror struck the Homa Bay Tourist Hotel, where members of the opposition delegation were accommodated. Armed youth on motorcycles stormed the premises, smashing windows, destroying property, and vandalizing security systems while searching room-to-room for political figures.

2. Attacks on Journalists and Media Teams

A media team covering the events was ambushed by armed assailants. Four journalists—including correspondents from Royal Media Services (RMS) and Agence France-Presse (AFP)—sustained physical injuries and had their equipment, cameras, and personal belongings stolen. A media vehicle was vandalized, while another chase vehicle in the convoy was torched near Homa Bay Town.

3. Roadblocks and Church Service Cancellations

Machete-wielding goons set up makeshift barricades using logs, boulders, and burning tires near Nyandiwa in Suba South. The severe security threats forced the delegation to cancel a planned Sunday morning church service with local residents before rerouting their convoy.

4. Tear Gas and Clashes Along Convoy Routes

As the Linda Mwananchi procession pressed forward to reach scheduled venues like Nyandiwa, tear gas canisters were lobbed into the crowds. Supporters worked alongside convoy security to clear barricaded main roads amid running battles.

Condemnation and Police Response

Political leaders and human rights watchdogs, including Amnesty International Kenya, issued swift condemnations of the violence, criticizing the targeting of press freedom, political gatherings, and private businesses.

Police spokesperson statements confirmed that at least 17 suspects were arrested in connection with the road blockades, assaults, and property destruction. Authorities stated that preliminary investigations point toward hired gangs mobilized to incite panic and disrupt political activities in the region.
