The KSh 259 Fuel Scare: EPRA Sets the Record Straight

In the last 24 hours, social media platforms have been set ablaze by a viral “breaking news” alert claiming that fuel prices in Kenya are set to skyrocket to an unprecedented KSh 259 per litre. For many Kenyans already grappling with the high cost of living, this news triggered immediate panic. However, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has moved to clarify the situation, dismissing the reports as unfounded misinformation.

The Source of the Panic

The rumor appears to have gained traction following speculative statements regarding the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on global oil supply chains. While global crude prices have indeed seen fluctuations due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, these changes have not yet been factored into the local pump prices. EPRA’s current pricing cycle remains firmly in place, and the “KSh 259” figure is a fabrication designed to cause alarm.

The Facts: Current Pump Prices (March–April 2026)

According to the latest official review released by EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, fuel prices for the current cycle (running until April 14, 2026) have remained unchanged. The regulator noted that the fuel currently being sold was imported before the most recent spike in global landed costs.

Here is the breakdown of what you should actually be paying at the pump in major towns:

Town,Super Petrol (KSh),Diesel (KSh),Kerosene (KSh)

Nairobi,178.28,166.54,152.78

Mombasa,175.00,163.26,149.49

Nakuru,177.34,165.95,152.21

Eldoret,178.16,166.77,153.03

Kisumu,178.16,166.76,153.03

Why Prices Might Change in the Future

While the KSh 259 figure is currently false, economic advisors have warned that the April–May review could be “tough and brutal.” If the disruption of energy supplies in the Middle East continues, experts suggest we could see a genuine rise toward the KSh 230–250 range in the coming months.
