Kenya Airways has unveiled plans to raise $500 million in new capital by the first quarter of 2026, aiming to modernize and expand its fleet amid financial turbulence.

The airline recorded a pretax loss of KSh 12.17 billion ($94 million) in the first half of 2025, a steep decline from a KSh 634 million profit over the same period last year. The downturn was largely linked to the temporary grounding of three Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.

CEO Allan Kilavuka said the airline expects to secure shareholder approval and finalize the capital sourcing plan by Q1 2026. This follows a challenging era that included a government bailout of $150 million earlier in 2025.

Despite the setbacks, Kenya Airways posted a pretax profit in 2024—driven by foreign exchange gains—before sliding into a loss in H1 2025. The planned $500 million injection aims to restore fleet capacity and position the national carrier for a robust comeback
